Bandadois

Bandadois

Going back in time I remember well a magical one-off Sunday night session at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club with that gentle Tropicalista - Gilberto Gil. Experiencing Gil in this most intimate of settings was a tantalizing and heart warming experience that confirmed a commonly held view that when you meet him you just want to be friends with him. Listening to his latest CD, Bandadois, brought back memories of that night. On this live recording (also available on DVD) he whistles, he scats, he teases familiar melodies from his acoustic guitar and altogether seems to be having a great time now that he’s vacated his weighty position as Brazil’s Minister of Culture. Gil is unashamedly intellectual and beneath the warm amiability of his performance are poetic songs, rich in wordplay, that convey large ideas which ponder Afro-Brazilian traditions, technology, love, death, art, divinity, metaphysics and the meaning of humanity. Unfortunately, you’ll have to take my word for that as there are no translations of the lyrics available on either the album or his website. There are classic songs here like Jackson Do Pandeiro’s ‘Chiclete Con Banana’ – guaranteed to have the audience singing the chorus - and Dorival Caymmi’s ‘Saudade Da Bahia’. But most of the sixteen songs in his set are self-penned and span Gil’s three decade plus career. Apart from a little assistance from his two sons, Berne and Jose, and a duet with Maria Rita – daughter of the inimitable Elis Regina – on ‘Amor Ate O Fim’ this is Gilberto Gil acoustic, alone and fully exposed. Bandadois quietly confirms Gil’s rightful place in the higher echelons of Brazil’s musical royalty.

Gilberto Gil - Bandadois is out now on Warner Classics & Jazz.

Gilberto Gil plays the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London SE1 on 21 July 2010 as part of Festival Brazil.
